Review: RovyVon GL2 Light/LAser

It has been a moment but I am still here. Today we will take a look at the new RovyVon GL2. I was impressed with the GL4 Pro and GL5 so when RovyVon reached out and offered their new GL2 for review i was excited to see it and test it. So let's dive into this new compact handgun light and laser.

GL2 Is A Compact Pistol Light & Laser

While the GL4 and GL5 are designed for handgun use. they are a bit wide. And some people dont always need both VIS and IR in a single device. So RovyVon is offering a smaller and more affordable LAM (Laser Aiming Module) for handguns with their new GL2. The GL2 is offered in two flavors, IR or VIS. I requested the IR version which has a single IR LED for illumination and IR laser for aiming. The IR version has an 850nm 400mw IR LED while the IR laser is an eye safe 850nm and 0.39mw. If you get the VIS version it has a 400 lumens white LED and 5mw green laser which is also eyesafe.

The GL2 has some fantastic designs implemented into it. RovyVon positioned the laser emitter as high as possible close to the barrel as possible. This places the LED below it. Because of this design choice the elevation adjustment is on the left side of the Gl2 housing with the windage elevation adjustment on the right handside.

Similar to the GL4 Pro, the GL2 LED head is the battery cap. Twist it clockwise from 11 o'clock to 1 o'clock and pull the head off to change batteries. The GL2 is powered by a single CR123. It is also engineered to use a rechargeable 16340 (RCR123). If you use a rechargeable battery, the white LED output goes from 400 lumens to 700 lumens.

The elevation and windage adjustment screws are amazing. They have a very positive click when you turn them so you can feel each adjustment,. This also helps keep the adjustments from shifting under recoil.

The mount system for the GL2 is adjustable. The GL2 comes with a 1913 slot key and a GL slot key for Glock frames. You can see in the image below how the slot keys are teethed to interface with the clamping part of the mount.

In order to change out the locking keys, you loosen the mount screw and rotate the slot key from under the right ahnd side and lift it out.

Using The GL2

When the GL2 is activated, there is a green indicator LED on the left handside. It faces rearward and it hidded by these wings that protrude rearward. However I found the LED to be too bright.

You can see how the LED shines on the front magwell of this FLUX Raider 365. Its not an issue for a VIS GL2, but for IR use, it is very bright and can be seen by someone you might not want to know you are there.

Right next to the elevation adjustment screw is the selector switch. It is a little too small and recessed for my liking. I would like ot to be bigger or taller so it is easier to manipulate.

Activation is performed by pressing the toggle switches just like the GL4 and GL5. There are ambidextruous rocker switches on both sides of the GL2. Pushing them up or down will activate constant on. In the neutral position, you can press forward on the rocker switch for momentary activation. I wish the switches were positioned higher where those metal wings are. Im not sure why the metal wings even exist. You can see below how far down my support hand thumb has to reach to activate the GL2.

In the photo below, this is how I prefer to position my support hand thumb for better recoil and muzzle climb control. It is pretty far from the GL2 switch.

I wanted to use the GL2 on my Flux Raider 365 and was pleased to find that it clears the brace.

Even more surprising is that the GL2 can fit in the factory Flux holster for the Raider 365.

Shooting With The GL2

The GL2 looks and feels great but my shooting experience has not been as good as I had hoped. While it did hold zero and the illuminator was adequate i found that the mounting system was not sufficient and the GL2 would constantly shift forward regardless of the platform it was mounted on.

All three of these stups had the GL2 mounted as rearward as possible. After a single magazine the GL2 has shifted forward.

Final Thoughts On The GL2

For full disclosure, RovyVon sent me their GL2 and the left side rocker switch would not work in momentary. I would press the switch and the GL2 would activate for a moment and then turn back off. The right side switch worked as it should. So RovyVon sent me a replacement unit. I tested both of these units and they both slid forward under recoil no matter how tight I tightend the mounting screw.

I liek the size of the GL2 and the price point However if the sliding under recoil issue is not solved or fixed, I do not know if it is worth getting. Your zero on the laser could shift if the GL2 cannot stay where it should.

I would also like the LED heads to be offered separately so users can at least switch from VIS to IR if they so choose to do so.
